chapter 17 s
Eighteen years was a long time to live in an area. In a span of time such as that, people feel more comfortable where they were, than where they came from. It was never truer than when the two places were as dissimilar as day was to night. Mike’s parents were coming for a visit the next week. He loved seeing them; except their visits also brought all of the family issues he had missed and placed them squarely in his lap. Usually by the time they left his head would be spinning.
Galen and Cindy had driven up from Laneville to visit. Galen was outside on the balcony talking to his son. Galen was fifty-six years old now and Cindy was two years behind him at fifty-four. They watched a squirrel run across the ground and commented how at one time that constituted a good meal.
“Son, you’ve come a long way from where you started. Don’t get too big to remember where you came from,” Galen said.
“You don’t have to worry about that. You can’t forget growing up that way. I wish I could somehow give my children a taste of what it was like. Everything’s too easy now. Look at this place. I never thought about living like this,” Mike said.
“You know when you first asked me about bein a preacher. I thought the next day you’d be on to something else, but you stuck with it,” Galen said.
“It is kind of amazing isn’t it? I didn’t know what I was talking about.”
“Is all of this too much? Should a preacher be livin like this? Don’t people talk?” Galen asked.
“Daddy, people are always going to talk. All I can do is live my life and preach the word. God keeps enriching us. A lot of what I make comes from books and the ministry. The church has me on a salary plan and bonus.”
- 121 “Well, I’m proud of ya. You’ve done well. I’m proud of Janice too. She’s been a great daughter-in-law, and she keeps right up with you,” Galen said.
“I wouldn’t have made it without her. We were just kids when we came up here and as green as grass. One day she told me to rely on my gut when I made decisions, and she trusted me to do what’s best. Since then, I’ve never looked back,” Mike said.
“You can’t find women like her and yo momma anymore. These young women just want to know what you gonna to do for’em, and a man gets tired of that fast.” Galen observed.
“That’s the truth,” Mike replied.
“You’re doing great, but don’t forget about your sister, Nancy. I know she a mess, and her husband is a drunkard, but she’s yo blood.”
“Yeah, I know. Nancy makes her decisions on all of the wrong things. Edward was nothing but a honky-tonk guy, and she went for the excitement. When she married him, that was the ballgame,” Mike said.
“All I’m sayin is, if she needs help don’t turn yo back on her.
